News from the Zelmer Zoo

Maria hard at work!
Here's what is happening this week in the Zelmer Zoo:

Language Arts: Reading Detective Clubs will be formed in our classroom this week. Each group of Reading Detectives will be working to solve a different mystery. Each Reading Detective will be given a badge and a case file to solve. Students will meet in groups to discuss the mystery they are reading. They will share clues they have uncovered and possible suspects who may be involved in the mystery. After reading their book and solving the mystery, detectives must complete a detective case report as their final assignment.

Spelling: The district is evaluating how Spelling is taught. You received a letter today in your child's Monday Night Folder explaining the new concept of Word Study that our district has adopted. In doing so a list of high frequency (no excuse) word lists have been created for grades K-3. Third grade and above will be expected to be able to recognize and spell all words on the list. We will begin pretesting this week to see what each student already knows and where they need to study and practice. Stayed tuned for more information.

If you have a child in grades 3-5 you may refer them for Screening for the Gifted and Talented program (GATE). All students in grade 2 will be tested. You may stop by the main office to pick up a referral form or you may request one be sent home by your child’s homeroom teacher. All referrals need to be completed by October 15, 2008. If you have any questions contact Donna Baumgarner at 886-4520 or donnab@oconee.k12.sc.us .

Students will have pictures made tomorrow. They do not need to bring money for these photos, and every student will have their photo taken. If you have a background color preference, you will need to send that sheet to school tomorrow!
